In Memoriam
We were saddened to learn of the passing of Suburban Rotary Charter Member, Alan Simon, last week.   Alan was a wonderful member with a keen sense of humor.  As the Hanging Judge for  many years, he was well-known for giving low fines with hefty "Shipping and Handling" fees.   He was a good friend and a good Rotarian and will be missed.    Services were held online last week.  Condolences can be sent to his family in care of his son, Bruce Simon, 8419 Loveland Drive, Omaha, NE 68124.

You can read an article in this weekend's World- Herald by clicking HERE.   Alan's obituary is HERE.

After Hours at the Lake THIS THURSDAY !
Mark your calendars for Thursday, July 23rd. We will have an outdoors After Hours hosted by Theresa Kelly, Steve Scheuber, and Kevin Welsh.

In-Person Meetings- Please read!
President Mary Bernier announced last week that the Board has decided to move forward with resuming in-person meetings on Thursday, August 13th with safety protocols in place and as long as there are no changes to directives from the health department and state government.   Meetings will continue in a hybrid format offering both online participation and in-person participation.   We know that not everyone can or will be comfortable with attending meetings in-person so the plan is to continue to offer both formats going forward.
In person meetings protocols:

1.) Timing: In-person meeting at Anthony's will begin on Thursday, August 13th.   We will require sign-ups in advance for all attending no later than noon the day before.

2.)  Meals: All those attending in-person will be required to purchase lunch. Anthony's will not allow us to have people who are not eating in the facility at this time. The cost for the meal is going up as it will now be plated and served.  Meal cost will be $17.  You can arrive anytime after 11:15. Salads will be pre-set on the tables at 11:30 and meals will be served at noon.  Serving meals at the same time will ensure food temperature and quality.   Anthony's employees will be masked and gloved.

4.) Seating will be somewhat socially distanced.   We will be using a larger space, spreading out tables, and limiting the number of people at each table.  We will ask that you remain at your table for the meeting.

5.)  Masks: Greeters will meet you at the entrance and offer you hand sanitizer when you enter. We ask everyone to wear masks arriving and departing.  You can remove your mask to eat when you are seated.

6.) Badges will put out for those registered to attend a meeting. We will ask you then to keep your badge with you for the foreseeable future. (Leaving it in your car is the best way not to lose it!). We are trying to minimize contact and having everyone keep his/her own badge helps with that.

7.) Attendance:  Attendance requirements are not in force, however, we will recognize those who have achieved 100% attendance regardless of whether that is online or in-person.  Since we don't have a good way of tracking this, it will be on the honor system.     There will be no scanning of badges for attendance.

8.) Payments: In order to minimize risks, we are going to move away from handling cash at Rotary meetings.  We will ask that you either pay for your meeting online or purchase a lunch ticket.  You can also bring a check made out for the correct amount to a meeting but you must still register in advance.   This will include fines, duck for a buck, and brag for bucks. There is a link on the home page top right corner to pay these- you are on the honor system- paying fines helps our local Foundation.

In summary, you are important to Suburban Rotary and we will meet you wherever you are with health and safety concerns. We understand that not everyone can or will want to attend in-person meetings.  For that reason, we are investing in technology and soliciting volunteers to bring you the best hybrid meeting experience also. We hope you will share with those you know the value of Rotary in your life and business. We hope to use the hybrid meetings as a recruiting tool, allowing people to participate while traveling or when work or other situations do not allow for in-person attendance.

We look forward to seeing you in person or online!
District Conference and Double your Donation!
Consider making a donation to the Rotary Foundation this week and have your donation matched by the District to reach your next Paul Harris level.   You don't have to attend the District Conference, but we encourage all members to do so.

Everything you need to know to register, attend, and donate can be found HERE.
Backpacks for students at the Children's and Family Center
We had originally planned a community celebration with the Children and Family Center but that project has changed due to the virus and will now be a backpack distribution. Volunteers are needed to pack and distribute backpacks. It will take place with social distancing and masks will be required.  CLICK HERE to see available spots.   3549 Fontanelle Blvd.

Kindness Is As Kindness Does

I stood in line of a local Qboda’s on a Friday several years ago waiting to buy my regular burrito bowl to bring back to the office.  Overtaken by my crazy work week, my mind worried through the many half-finished projects on my desk. My mind returned to the present when the young man in front of me said to the woman behind the counter,

“...And I would like to pay for her meal also.” He turned his kind eyes toward me and nodded.

“Oh no,” I protested, somewhat startled.

“Please let me pay,” he said. “Someone did this for me and now I want to do it for you.”

My eyes filled with tears. “Thank you so much.”

Somehow, the weight I had been carrying slipped from my shoulders. I returned to work with my meal, but also the profound knowledge that the world is essentially good.

Last week,  Doug Hansen quoted Mother Teresa in his invocation, “If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway.” I urge you to be kind in your daily practice. One simple act of kindness may affect your recipient, but it most certainly will affect you.

And to the man who paid for my lunch, “Thank you. I paid it forward, too.”

See you at the ESU or on Zoom this Thursday!
