Yolanda Hoffman introduced Alex Torres who spoke about the work of the Intl. Red Cross in Asia. The RISK bag was at $70 and Ralph Williams won a free lunch.
Last week Judy Cline introduced us to new members Javid Dabestani and Jess Rustad.
Javid Dabestani is a Financial Advisor with Northwestern Mutual. He was born in Shiraz, Iran and his parents left Iran during the overthrowing of the Shah receiving the last passports before the American embassy in Iran closed forever. He lived in Lincoln, Nebraska as a small child, then grew up in Idaho. He came back to Lincoln to study Secondary English Education and moved to Omaha in 2007.
Javid toured the U.S. and Europe as a professional musician in the early to mid-2000's before he started working in the financial industry. Javid is married to Brittany and they have two children. He is the Founder of the Omaha Ramen Noodle Festival and is on the Finance Committee of Live Well Omaha. Welcome, Javid!
Jess Rustad works for Kidwell, a multi-solution technology provider, as a Business Development Specialist for their IT Services division. Jess is a University of Nebraska graduate and attended graduate school in N. Chicago last year. She will be pursuing her MBA here in Nebraska.
Jess is an active volunteer and is a former member of Lincoln #14 Rotary and a volunteer for Bryan Health, Junior League, the Ralston Chamber of Commerce, and several other organizations. Jess is married to Zac who belongs to Lincoln #14. In her free time, she likes to fly with her husband in his plane, train for marathons, and work out at the gym. Welcome, Jess!
Former long-time member of Suburban Rotary, Howard Krantz, passed away this last week. Howard will be remembered for reaching out to new members who joined the club and for hosting the annual golf dinner. Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers. Howard Elliott Krantz, passed away on July 14, 2016. He was born in Omaha on June 16, 1934. Howard was married to the love of his life, Barbara Bialac Krantz, wife of 62 years. Howard was the son of David and Rose Krantz and along with his father and son-in-law grew the family business, Allen Furniture. Howard was active with his Suburban Rotary Club. Everyone that encountered Howard could feel the warmth of his presence. His fondest memories were with his family. He was the sunshine that brought light to every corner of every room. He loved his house in Arizona, where he would read, paint, and enjoyed an occasional cigar with his grandchildren on “The Policy,” his boat. He was most devoted to his family: his son Jim and his wife Susan Krantz, his daughter Susie and husband Stewart Smoler. Howard leaves his four grandchildren; Danny and Kate Krantz, and David and Allison Smoler. Howard will be remembered and adored as the most gentle and loving person. Howard felt the true riches of life are family and passed as the richest man, with family by his side.
Howard requested no mourning or service. Those who wish to celebrate his life should donate to their favorite charity.
Please keep Marlon Lofgren and his family in your thoughts and prayers as well. Marlon's dad passed two weeks ago and his mother passed away last week. Condolences to them in this very difficult situation. Marlon and Laurie Lofgren, 418 S. 159th Ave., Omaha, NE 68118.
The Baxter Kenworthy volleyball tournament for Suburban Rotary Scholarships is this weekend. Volunteers are needed to help during the tournament. Please sign up online if you can help. We will also have a team sponsored by the Suburban Rotary Past Secretaries. Even if you can't volunteer, consider swinging by to watch and show support for this great event. Play starts at 9am.

Razia Jan, President/Founder of the Zabuli Education Center: Razia has worked tirelessly for many years to forge connections between Afghans and Americans. Razia had the boldness and vision to open a school that provides free education for hundreds of girls in rural Afghanistan in 2008 - a year when the Taliban killed nearly 150 teachers, students and school employees - and she’s coming to OUR conference!
And opening this year was the Razia Jan Institute, the first free, private women’s community college in rural Afghanistan. Some of the women and their classmates have been featured in a documentary, “What Tomorrow Brings,” which recently premiered. The Director of this documentary, Beth Murphy, will also be at OUR conference! Another amazing addition.
