Candace Gregory Named Omahan of the Year
Candace Gregory has been named the 2026 Omahan of the Year by the Suburban Rotary Club of Omaha.  For the past 30 years, she has served as President/ CEO of the Open Door Mission, a nonprofit that serves the poor and homeless populations in the Metro. She has become a noted national advocate for those experiencing homelessness and poverty and is sought out for her experience in implementing programs that help end the cycle of homelessness and poverty. Candace leads a well-run, financially secure service with compassion, grace and integrity, all-the-while staying under the radar, focused on her mission rather than her achievements. She will receive her award on June 18 at the noon weekly meeting of the club at Legends Restaurant, 6920 Pacific St., Suite 100.

Dr. Gregory is a graduate of Grace University with a degree in Human Development and Family Studies. In 2004, she received an honorary doctorate from Clarkson College of Sciences in Humanitarian Services.
Currently, ensuring responsible fiscal oversight of an annual budget of 34 million with approximately 132 employees and 14,000+ volunteers, she is known for her vision, strategic planning and success.  Recently, Dr. Gregory launched a $20 million Expanding Hope Capital Campaign. The three-phase capital campaign will expand hope and address critical needs and challenges in our community.
 
Dr.  Gregory has received numerous awards, accolades and accomplishments for her dedicated efforts. 
 
Dr. Gregory resides in Iowa with her husband, Steve and their chiweenie, Dolly.  They have four grown children and four grandchildren.
 
According to Mary Bernier Chairman of the Four- Way Test Committee of the Suburban Rotary Club of Omaha, Candace was chosen unanimously by the 4-Way Test Committee because of ‘her commitment to the Omaha Community. Through her efforts for the poor and homeless she exemplifies the Rotary motto service above self and has inspired our community take care of each other.’
 
Yearlings with Past Presidents
As part of the onboarding process with new members, called Yearlings, this week the group met with past presidents of the club.  They shared their leadership insights, experience and history with the club. 
June 15 Deadline for Dues
Thanks to those of you who have paid your dues. Today is the deadline for payments. Please let Executive Secretary Deborah Daley know if you have mailed a check or made other arrangements.  You can still pay online by clicking here. We will take one final set of payments at the June 18 meeting.  If you have other questions please contact Deb.

Yearlings were asked what their favorite women's sports is and most responded volleyball.   
 
Aldi Moussa was introduced to the club as a new member by his sponsor Angela Chaney.  Charles Rosenthal was introduced as a new member by Chris Barone. 
 
 
Several club members received Charlene Tierney certificates. 
 
Anthony Flott received his blue badge. 

Speaker Joanne Li talked about how UNO is Omaha's college and how groups like Rotary are so important to the community. She reminded the audience that UNO was rated in the Wall Street Journal as #1 in Best Value, #1 in social mobility and #1 in student experiences.  She spotlighted the  university's other achievements including its academic research facility, its center of excellence, work force development, health science collaboration (having the #1 Biometrics Lab) and how graduates are staying in Nebraska and supporting economic development. 
District Polio Ride
This message is going to Club Leadership in Rotary District 5650
 
We have postponed the Polio ride scheduled for next Saturday (5/23/26) to August 29th.   We didn't have enough riders to justify the volunteer effort we put together.  We'lll use the next three months to get registration to 60-80 riders.  We have a spot for one more club to man an aid station.  The next club that volunteers will be eligible for a $500 grant for the project of their choice.   
 
As a reminder, the Ride is an opportunity for you to engage your members in support of Rotary's most significant International project. We need your help to get members and riders engaged.  This event is open to the general public, families, and Rotarians.  It features:
 
  • Family friendly 10 and 25 mile rides (all on trails)
  • A 42 mile ride for people looking for a little more challenge
  • Bike clinics hosted by the Bellevue Bicycle Club
  • Food trucks
  • Riders get a quality t-shirt, an entry into a raffle to win a $500 gift certificate to a local bike ship, and the registration includes a PolioPlus donation.

To achieve the Club Excellence Award:
1.Go to Rotary Club Central
2.Review the available goals
3.Set at least half of the available goals
4.Achieve those goals
5.Report achievement in Rotary Club Central by 30 June.
6.Pay club invoices in full upon receipt
 
June is also the last month of my 2025-26 year as your District Governor. It has been such an honor to meet and serve all of you this past year!! I am so proud of everything you have done to serve your communities and the world to “Unite for Good”!!
 
As I hand the torch of service July 1st, to incoming District Governor, Gretchen Bren, 2026-27, I know that we are in great hands!!
 
Finally, remember to invite a guest to your Rotary Club meeting. Grow your membership. One meeting could change their life and yours as well.
