Last week Roxy Orr and Rebecca Vinton were our greeters. Tracy Rowland gave the invocation. We had several announcements and presentations as well as a new member introduction. President Curt Peters recognized Ashley Baker for her work on the Crestridge projects and David Kutler for his work on Monster Mash as "Gifts to the World" last week. Our two exchange students Lulu and Juri shared a few words with us on their exchange so far. Secretary Kevin Welsh recognized some birthdays and "brags for bucks." Kathryn Schubert introduced Marian Fey who talked about the Nebraska Cultural Endowment and the projects that it funds. The RISK bag was at $508 and Lyle Sapp won a free lunch.
Last week Curt Peters introduced us to new member Michael Manahan. Mike is has been an entrepreneur for many years. He has started a new venture called FixMyPhone which does iPhone and iPad repair as well as Samsung phones which are accidentally damaged at Neil Diamond concerts (ask Curt). Mike was born in the Phillipines but grew up in Omaha. He holds a degree in Economics. He and his wife Theresa have 4 children. Their son Zach was a Rotary exchange student last year.
In his free time, Mike enjoys his Faith, family, football and cars. He and his wife also enjoy remodeling and are building a new house. Welcome Michael!
Congratulations to Christian Kloster who finished all of his Yearling requirements and received his permanent badge from Yearlings Chair Holly Hollenbeck last week.

MIKE KEMP
Mike Kemp was elevated to the position of Associate Athletic Director for Omaha Athletics in May 2009. He has primary oversight of UNO hockey and men's and women's soccer as well as facilities and game management.
During his 12-year tenure as head coach, Kemp guided UNO hockey from a fledgling independent to an established program with one of the best followings in college hockey. UNO has ranked among the nation’s college hockey elite in attendance from the start and boasts college hockey’s largest booster club. He concluded his career with a record of 201-220-53.
As the head coach of a start-up program, Kemp built a team that was a model of consistency in the always-tough Central Collegiate Hockey Association. In only 10 years of play, UNO had an average finish of sixth place in the league and earned CCHA home playoff games in eight of those ten years. Kemp also placed players on one of the CCHA all-league teams in eight of ten years. Both of those accomplishments are surpassed only by the University of Michigan.
Kemp may be best remembered for his commitment to community service. Under his guidance, the UNO hockey team was widely recognized for its contributions to the quality of life in greater Omaha. The highlight came during the 2008-09 season when the team held its “Leap for a Cure” fundraiser which raised $44,000 for brain cancer research at the Estabrook Cancer Center.
Kemp coached five All-Americans while at Omaha and had a total of twelve all-CCHA players in ten years.
Off the ice, Kemp is an avid runner and has competed in the Boston Marathon.
Kemp and his wife, Julie, have two daughters; Emily and Sarah.

Mary Beth is the founder and President of Ryan Signs, Inc., in Madison. She is a non-lawyer Fee Arbitrator and a (past) non-lawyer member of the Client Security Fund of the State Bar of Wisconsin. Mary Beth is a former member of the Board of Directors and ongoing supporter of the What If? Foundation, which works to feed and educate children in Haiti.
Personal time is shared with her husband Alan Selene (PDG, District 5970) and daughter Bridget.
Mary Beth Growney Selene has been a member of the Rotary Club of Madison West Towne-Middleton since 1987 and she served her club as President in 1993-1994. She has been a host parent to four Rotary Youth Exchange students.
In her District 6250 she served as Governor in 2000-2001; District Membership Chair and District Rotary Foundation Chair.
Mary Beth has had the opportunity to serve as the Rotary International President’s Representative to several District Conferences. She served as a Training Leader at the International Assembly in San Diego in 2008 and 2009 and was the District 6250 Representative to the Council on Legislation in 2004, 2007 and 2010.
She served as the General Chair for the (then) Zones 27 & 28 Institute and was a Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator for Zone 27, the Public Image Resource Coordinator for Zone 28, and as Zone 28 Rotary Coordinator. Mary Beth is served as Rotary International Director in 2013-2015.
She has received Rotary International’s Service Above Self Award and The Rotary Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service.
Mary Beth and Alan are Major Donors to The Rotary Foundation. They are currently Sustaining Members to the Annual Fund of The Rotary Foundation and Bequest Society members to The Rotary Foundation Endowment Fund.
Hey Everyone! So I realized I left out a super important thing in my last post and that was to say thank you. Thank you all so. Thank you for supporting me and for allowing me to have this amazing experience. Words can not convey how grateful I am. That being said life in Taiwan is quite uhhh different. Not good, nor bad, just different. I could go on for hours about all the differences but for right now i'll stick with one. The automatic doors. Now this is a very minor difference (considering just how big some are) but it still affects me. In the U.S. automatic doors are just that, automatic. Here its about a 4 second delay. Now this may seem insignificant but every single time I go to an automatic door I forget this. And every single time I run straight into the glass. Oops. On the other end of the spectrum there are quite a few major differences in welfare of the people. Ive always been very very interested in psychology, sociology and human rights. Now at first I put these interests to the side and worry about other things. But an incident occurred that caused my mind to focus. Now i'm a bit apprehensive to share this because it is a very serious issue. But on my way to the bus station I saw a very severe case of domestic violence. I couldn't do anything at the moment but waited until the man left to attempt to comfort the women in my very poor Chinese. I cried for one of the first times since I got here that day. I cried because I could see the fear in that woman's eyes. A fear which has been shown in too many eyes. I haven't seen anymore cases but upon further research it apparently is somewhat of an issue here in Taiwan but normally kept out of the public's eye. Now you may be wondering why I chose to share this story of my amazing surplus of happy ones but the reason is because one of the first things I thought about when I saw this was rotary. I thought about service before self and about how I can help not only this woman but this issue as a whole. I can't help much here because of the language barrier but I'm working with the other exchange students and some classmates to print off flyers with the address and hotlines for domestic abuse centers (with rotary's permission of course). Also I encourage anyone who happens to read this to get involved with the local center. You never know who needs help.

I can’t believe it’s already been a month. I don’t even know where to begin. My birthday is earlier in the month (September 6th) and they threw me a party. They being my host family, future host families, my counselor, his wife, and Mrs. Hashimoto. It was the Friday before my birthday. We went out to dinner and had a room to ourselves. Everyone is so nice- I was able to talk with my future host families. MY THIRD HOST FAMILY HAS A DOG. We had a traditional Japanese dinner and then we had cake. Cake that was Totoro themed! They found out Totoro is my favorite movie so they ordered a Totoro cake. I was so happy- it was so cute I didn't want to eat it.
On my actual birthday my host family and I went to sushi conveyor belt and then came back to the house. They also gave me a cake-this time it was strawberry. I have never before made this big of a deal out of my birthday before. It was so sweet.
A couple of my classmates gave me presents as well-and they all sang me Happy Birthday. I love school so far. The first day was nerve-racking but I made it through-and I have a lot of friends- not just in my class. It is kind of strange being in a class full of 15-16 year olds when I am 19 now, but they are all very kind people-and I made some friends my age.
I joined Taiko(Traditional Japanese Drum) Club, and I am going to look at the Music club! I am so happy. I also am apart of ESS- English speaking students- I help with English. I also love going up to the library- I can’t read a lot of the books- but their Art section is fantastic.
School was cancelled one day because of the Typhoon, it wasn’t too bad in Hamamatsu-city. But, it was horrible near Tokyo.
Sports day is also coming up- I am doing tug-o-war, jump rope, and marching. Yes, marching. I’m not sure why we are marching- I think it has something to do with respect…
During my second rotary meeting I meet to students who volunteered in Cambodia to plant trees. Their presentation was great, and very interesting. They are also my age. I talked to them in Japanese almost daily. They were very kind. Thank you!
