Last week Blane McCann was our greeter. Karen Bremer gave the invocation. We had several announcements, presentations and a new member introduction.     Julie Livingston filled in for Secretary Kevin Welsh. We had some Halloween shenanigans by Mei Wu and Judy Cline.   Rich Rowland introduced RI Director Mary Beth Growney-Selene who talked to us about the Rotary Foundation. The RISK bag was at $553 and Ralph Williams won the drawing and donated his half of the pot to the Rotary Foundation!

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Last week Ann Coyne introduced us to new member Karen Rolf.  Karen is an Associate Professor on the faculty at the Grace Abbott School of Social Work at UNO. She specializes in quantitative analysis and program evaluation.   Karen is a Chicago native and holds her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago.

 

Karen holds many board and advisory group memberships and is a member of the Human Capital and Economic Outcome Global Working Group led by Nobel Prize Laureate James Heckman.   Karen is an active volunteer and has provided equine therapy to grieving children and has been a hospice volunteer.

 

Karen is married to Mike and they have raised 4 biological children and 2 adopted children.  The youngest (who was adopted from Nicaragua) just graduated from Burke.  In her free time, Karen enjoys reading non-fiction, spending time with her dogs, gardening, and horseback riding.

Last week Foundation Chair Julie Livingston recognized Marlene Sullivan for her giving to the International Rotary Foundation.  The Rotary Foundation supports causes around the world including health, nutrition, literacy, and disease-eradication efforts.   Rotary Foundation funds have been used by our club to send science kits to the girls' school in Afghanistan, as well as for local projects such as the Crestridge Health Fair.

 

Last week Marlene Sullivan was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow for her donations of $1000 to the Rotary Foundation. Marlene  said, "I’m so proud to be a Rotarian.  I support fighting Polio and water projects so others can have better lives.  I have a passion for Crestridge School and am so appreciative of the financial support from TRF to complete two projects recently at that school."

 

Rich Rowland also recognized Julie Livingston with her Paul Harris +2  which means she has donated at least $3,000 to TRF.  Julie says, "When I was a new Rotarian I gave to TRF because someone told me it was important to do so.  After a couple of years I began to see for myself the terrific projects our club and other clubs worldwide were able to accomplish through grants from the Foundation."

On Wednesday, November 11th we will enjoy a tour of Baxter Arena with appetizers and drinks sponsored by Mark Stokes.

 

On Thursday, November 19th we will have our annual Keep the Kids Warm Event which will feature appetizers as well as drinks. Donations will  of kids coats, hats, and gloves will be accepted as well as monetary donations to purchase these items for needy kids at our partner  school-Crestridge Magnet School.

We are back at JCPenney Westroads with our annual tradition of ringing bells for the Salvation Army.  We will be ringing on November 28th (Thanksgiving weekend) and December 12th and need lots of volunteers to fill 40 spots for each Saturday.  Your family, friends, kids, grandkids, etc. are welcome and encouraged to join you.  Sign up now to get the shift you want.  Please consider signing up for the November 28th asap as we only have 2 meetings between now and that Saturday.   To sign up go to our website www.suburbanrotary.org and select the event from the left side of the website or from the calendar then select Bell Ringing and sign-in to select your shift.
