Last week Steve Scheuber gave the invocation.   Jack Hosking introduced us to Shannon Lewis of History Walks who gave a fascinating presentation on the Prospect Hill Cemetery and some Omaha History.

How to Join Us

Please plan to join us this Thursday at noon for our regular meeting.  The meeting will open at 11:45 for greetings.  Tom will ring the bell at 12:05.

There are 3 ways to join.  If you want help setting up technology on your computer or phone, please reach out. We have a group of volunteers that can assist you over the phone. Please note we are now using a waiting room for security.   Make sure your device has your name on it.

1.) You can join via our Zoom meeting by clicking on this link or pasting it into your browser.  https://zoom.us/j/169934377

This will allow us to see your face on camera (if you want- this is always an option to turn it off-everyone will be off once the speaker starts).  Download Zoom to your phone or computer now so you are ready.

2.) You can also join us on Facebook where we will stream the meeting live: https://www.facebook.com/SuburbanRotary/

You will need a Facebook account to watch on Facebook and we won't see you on camera.  Again, if you need help setting up a Facebook account, please reach out.

3.) Lastly, you can participate via your phone (landline or cell phone) by calling in at any of these phone #s:

Annual Fundraiser- Close the Gap!

In lieu of our Annual Fundraiser for the Suburban Rotary Charitable Foundation, Suburban Rotary is looking to help our neighbors by "Closing the Gap" and raising fundsfor the Food Bank of the Heartland.  Demand at food banks and pantries around the metro area has skyrocketed in the last two weeks due to hardships caused by the COVID-19 virus.

Last week we received excellent news that we have received $2500 in a District Grant to help our efforts and $7500 in a Club Grant from our Suburban Rotary Charitable Foundation.  This brings us to a little over $56,000 in donations and pledges.  If you are able, please consider a gift in any amount by clicking on the donate button on our website or by sending in a check to Suburban Rotary, 4089 South 84th St. PMB 317, Omaha, NE 68127.  (Call Jennifer to set up a monthly pledge.)

Thank you to all those who have pledged or donated so far!

Social Distance Service Project with a Perk!
We will be conducting the Prospect Hill Cemetery Adopt A Plot Spring Clean Up for Saturday,  5/16/20, 8 a.m.-Noon.

Social distancing is totally perfect for this project.  Our plot of land we are responsible for will need all kinds of active outdoor folks who have the desire and willingness to rake, sweep the curb, weed whack tall grass along the long west border fence line, pick up piles of yard waste (trucks are totally needed) to be moved to one prime drop off space, pick up sticks and litter and have fun.

Saturday, May 16th, anytime between 8 a.m.-Noon, grab your rake and broom or come pick up sticks at Prospect Hill Cemetery, 3202 Parker Street for the Adopt-A-Plot project.  Social distancing is ideal for this outdoor yard waste management volunteer gathering at one of the oldest cemeteries in Nebraska.  All Rotary volunteers attending will receive a free pass to attend a future History Walks Nebraska tour valued at $25.  Call Ward Peters at 402-551-6121 for any questions or to sign up to have fun outdoors tidying up a section of the grounds of the cemetery.
Service Above Self
Thank you all of the wonderful volunteers and donors for our 3 Red Cross Blood Drives. We saw a couple of videos featuring our own Mark Roberts at the last two meetings. CLICK HERE to see some photos of one of our drives last week featured in the World- Herald.

  • Three drives over 12 days
  • Of 140 donor opportunities, we had 135 potential donors come to our sites
  • And 45% of those 135 potential donors were 1st time donors (at least on Red Cross system)
  • 123 units of blood were collected, which by Red Cross’s calculations has the potential to save 369 lives
  • Nine Rotarians helped at the drives (thank you Bob Kment, Deanna Fuller, Karen Rolf, Elizabeth Hallgren (West), Eli McNichols, Chris Pfanstiel, Alex Pearson (West) and Nick Rosenberry (West))  We also had many Rotarian donors!

If you would like to volunteer at the Food Bank for the Heartland, please go to their website by clicking HERE and registering to volunteer. Families can volunteer together. You must provide your own mask and the opportunities allow for social distancing.

If you would like to volunteer for the Salvation Army to distribute meals please contact Erin at the info below:

In addition to the meal distribution sites, we also have an opportunity called Kids Cruisin’ Kitchen where meals are passed out to children throughout the summer. It is looking like we will need more volunteers by July and August. If this is something you or your members have interest in, please let me know and I will get them the specific information needed to enroll in this.

Now is the Perfect Time to Invite Guests to Rotary!
Just because we are not meeting in person, doesn't mean we can't host guests at Suburban Rotary meetings. In fact, now is the perfect time to invite someone to "visit" us at a virtual meeting.  Be sure to send Jennifer the name of your guest in advance so she knows to let them in via the "waiting room" on Zoom.  A visitor can learn about the fantastic service Rotary provides to the community especially during these tough times and the fellowship and friendship that being a Rotarian offers.   Just direct folks to the website to get all of the information to join us.  If they don't want to join via Zoom, encourage your guest to watch our livestream on Facebook and leave a comment for us.
About Us
Please keep Dick and Jan Caulk in your thoughts and prayers.  Their grandson was tragically killed in an apartment fire in Colorado.  Their address is 761 Leawood Drive, Omaha, NE 68154
