Our esteemed master of ceremonies for the Scholarship Luncheon is none other than Astronaut Clayton Anderson, whose achievements span the realms of space exploration, academia, and leadership. As a U.S. Astronaut from 1998 to 2013, Anderson made significant contributions, spending a total of 167 days in space and conducting six extravehicular activities (EVAs), totaling 38 hours and 28 minutes of cumulative spacewalk time. His experiences have not only fueled his passion for space but have also inspired his work as an author, with five published books to his name, three of which are tailored for children, igniting their curiosity about the wonders of space.
Currently serving as the President and CEO of the Strategic Air Command (SAC) & Aerospace Museum in Ashland, Nebraska, Anderson continues to be a guiding force in preserving and promoting the rich history of aerospace exploration. Furthermore, Anderson brings his wealth of expertise to Iowa State University, where he serves as a Professor of Practice, imparting essential knowledge in Aerospace Engineering to first-year students. His curriculum covers a wide array of topics, including the Space Environment, Spacecraft Environmental Control Systems, Ethics, and Teamwork, shaping the minds of future aerospace engineers.
Anderson's leadership extends beyond academia, as evidenced by his previous role as Emergency Operations Manager for NASA's Johnson Space Center. In this capacity, he facilitated the integration of diverse teams to function seamlessly during critical emergency response scenarios, ranging from natural disasters to terroristic attacks, showcasing his adeptness in process analysis, problem-solving, and efficiency enhancements.
