Meet Andee Hoig: The Media Maven Making Midlands Magic Happen

Andrea ‘Andee’ Hoig
Publisher & CEO of Midlands Business Journal

Picture this: A woman who's spent four decades turning stories into community gold. That's Andee Hoig, and her journey is extraordinary.

For 35 years, Andee was the heart behind metroMAGAZINE, where she didn't just cover philanthropy—she orchestrated it. Through her storytelling, she helped raise millions for Omaha and Council Bluffs nonprofits.

In 2020, she stepped into the CEO chair at Midlands Business Journal, the very newspaper her father founded in 1975. She's not just carrying on a family legacy—she's revolutionizing it, expanding from print into digital, TV, and podcasts. Every Friday, you can find her on Boomer Radio with radio superstar Dave Wingert for the MBJ Business Minute, bringing business insights to listeners throughout the region.

What makes Andee special isn't just her impressive resume. It's her genuine belief that small businesses are the heartbeat of communities—a philosophy she's brought to life through her latest venture, IMPACT 250, showcasing 250 stories of local inspiration and determination.

And here's the fun part—when she's not connecting businesses, nonprofits, and community leaders, you'll find Andee lacing up her running shoes for charity 5Ks. She's aiming for 50 races in 2025 to celebrate MBJ's 50th anniversary. When she's not racing for a cause, she's at home hanging out with her four crazy kitties … her words, not mine.

Andee Hoig isn't just a publisher; she's a community architect, building bridges between stories and impact, one connection at a time.

June 5 Highlights
Our June 5 meeting was full of recognition activities.

First we recognized Yearlings in attendance.

Amy Morris was introduced to the club by Dan Hosford as a new member.  Katie Henry introduced new member Erick Stueckrath.

Mary Bernier as Chair of the 4-Way Test Committee introduced John Knicely as Omahan of the Year.  He also received a plaque from President Zach Ziler.  The long-time Omaha broadcaster shared stories of his career including some of the most interesting broadcast stories and interviews he had done from doing an interview on death row to climbing an antenna tower.  He shared that Rotary is in his genes as his father was active in the club.

He wrote the following to Mary after the event. " “Thank you Mary.  Such a great spirit in Suburban Rotary.  My Dad would have loved the recognition you all gave me and the way to carry on service to others!”
6th Annual Car Show Success
Our 6th Annual Suburban Rotary Car Show was a tremendous success! With perfect 75-degree weather and an incredible turnout, the event brought together car enthusiasts, families, and community supporters for a day full of fun, food, and fantastic vehicles.
By the numbers:
  • 🚗 152 Cars Registered
  • 🙌 38 Volunteers
  • 🏆 33 Trophies Awarded
  • 🤝 22 Official Sponsors
  • 🧑‍⚖️ 11 Car Judges
  • 🌮 3 Food Trucks
  • 🏁 1 ASCS Sprint Car Midwest Region Champion – Jack Dover
The parking lot was packed, the energy was high, and Boomer Radio kept things lively with a live broadcast from the show. It was truly a family-friendly celebration of community spirit and automotive passion. All proceeds from the event support the Suburban Rotary Foundation, helping to fund youth programs in our local area.  Here is a slide show with some great pictures of the event.

A heartfelt thank you to our sponsors, volunteers, participants, and everyone who joined us—your support made this event unforgettable!  A special thank you to: Woodhouse Auto Family, Baxter Auto Group, Edwards Auto Group, O’Reilly’s Auto Parts, and Sonic.

Kelly Adams Returns
Kelly has been part of the employment industry for 30 years. He worked for the last 11 years for Community Options Individual and Family Service as an Employment Specialist, working with individuals that receive disability benefits and helping them re-enter the workforce and become independent of their SSI or SSDI.  Three years ago, he discovered a need in the community of an underserved population. When an individual is homeless or close to becoming homeless, coming out of recovery or reentering form incarceration, the transition back into the workforce can be not only difficult but overwhelming.  He decided to establish It’s All About Employment in 2022, becoming a 501c3 non-profit in August of 2022.

Kelly has been in the Omaha metro for his entire life.  He was raised in Council Bluffs, Iowa and moved to Omaha when his was 16 years old. He graduated from Central High School in 1981.  He has been married for 20 years to Connie Phillips Adams and has two grown sons.

District Governor's June Message

Rotarians: This is my last newsletter article. It is crazy to think how fast this year went by. As my term ends, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I have been able to share with you all over this past year. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve our communities alongside so many dedicated, compassionate Rotarians.

When I began this journey, it felt like a monumental task and I knew there would be challenges. But I am so thankful for the help and support that I have gotten along the way. I have really enjoyed the opportunity to get out and visit all of our 38 clubs to share stories and see the impact that you are having on your communities and your commitment to Service Above Self. You are truly an inspiration!  Being the district governor has been both rewarding and humbling.

Some of the moments that stand out include seeing Rotarians respond to the tornados that impacted some of our communities and in response the district created a foundation to provide an avenue to accept financial help from Rotarians in our community and from districts around the country. I enjoyed seeing the district partner with clubs by providing grant support to important projects in our communities. It reminds me of our theme for this year The Magic of Rotary and how we come together to create positive change.

A huge thank you to my fellow district leaders, club presidents, committee chairs and every single Rotarian in this district. Thank you for all of your tireless efforts, the ideas you bring to the table and your unwavering support.

As I hand over the leadership to District Governor Robert Rapp, I am confident that our district will continue to grow and thrive. Robert began his Rotary journey as a District 5650 Ambassadorial Scholar. I have had the honor to work with him over the past couple of years and I know he will bring great energy and a heart for service to his leadership role. We are in great hands! Please join me in supporting Robert to keep the spirit of Rotary alive in our communities to create hope and build a brighter future.

Don't forget that June is Rotary Fellowship Month. Rotary Fellowships are international groups that share a common passion. Being a part of these fellowships is a great opportunity to make new friends around the world while exploring a hobby or profession that will enhance your Rotary experience.

In closing, I leave you with a heart full of gratitude and pride in all that we have achieved together this Rotary year. Thank you all for making this one of the most memorable years that I have experienced.

Yours in Rotary,
Tom Kerfoot, District Governor
