HAL DAUB: 4th generation Nebraskan, Married with three children and five grandchildren, 4-term US Congressman, 2-term Mayor, Proud Member of Omaha Downtown Rotary, Eagle Scout, NU Board of Regents, and Chairman of the Social Security Advisory Board nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the US Senate.
Hal graduated from Omaha, Nebraska Benson High School in 1959, there was President of the Student Council, Valedictorian of his graduating class of 366 students, Drum Major of the Marching Band, National Forensic League Degree of Distinction, Deputy Commander of the ROTC detachment, World-Herald Scholar; received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1963, there was President of Student Government, inducted into Thurtene Junior Honorary, Omicron Delta Kappa, and Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, active in his Greek letter social fraternity Kappa Sigma; earned his law degree from University of Nebraska in 1966, there serving as the Regional Vice President for the Student Law Association of the American Bar Association and selected s the Most Outstanding Law Student in the Nation by his Law School Fraternity, Delta Theta Phi; and served as a Captain, U.S. Army Infantry, Platoon Leader and Company Commander with the Second United States Infantry Division, Korea, from 1966-1968, after finishing First in his Infantry Basic Training Class at Ft. Benning Georgia.
Hal practiced law in Omaha with the firm of Fitzgerald, Brown, Leahy, McGill & Strom from 1968 to 1971; was Vice-President and General Counsel with Standard Chemical Manufacturing Company from 1971 to 1981; elected to and served four-terms in the United States House of Representatives working for Nebraskans as a member of the most powerful and influential committee of the Congress, the Ways and Means Committee from 1981 to 1989; campaigned for the U. S. Senate on two occasions; was a principal and partner in the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche from 1989 to 1995; served as the twice-elected Mayor of the City of Omaha from 1995 until 2001; was elected to the Boards of the Nebraska League of Municipalities, the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the National League of Cities, and was President of the National Republican Mayors and Local Officials Association for six years; was elected to be a Delegate to the last eleven Republican National Conventions, served as Vice-Chairman of the Metropolitan Entertainment and Convention Authority Board, was Chairman of Community Health Charities of America National Board, National Committeeman for the Nebraska Republican Party, was President and CEO of the American Health Care Association, and is was a Partner and is now retired Senior Counsel with Husch Blackwell law firm. Appointed by President G.H.W. Bush to the National Advisory Commission on the Public Service in 1990 and nominated by President George W. Bush, to serve a six-year term on the permanent statutory Social Security Advisory Board and as a result of confirmation by the U.S. Senate on January 25, 2002 and at the direction of the President, on February 5, 2002, serve as its Chair for the next four years. Hal was a delegate to the 2006 White House Conference on Aging. He served as a publicly elected member of the University of Nebraska Board of Regents.

Hello, my fellow Rotarians! I cannot believe the biggest celebration in District 5650 is less than 2 weeks away!! I am so excited we are coming together to Create Hope in the World! We have over 200 awesome Rotarians registered, and it is going to be fabulous!
We are honored to be joined by Rotary International President Representatives, Eric and Sandra Liu, from Houston, Texas. Throughout Friday and Saturday, all the attendees will be inspired by speakers and fellow Rotarians to take our message of Hope back to their communities. We are going to come together to share ideas and create plans for making this the Best Rotary District in the Universe!!
I am especially looking forward to Saturday night’s Awards Banquet. We will be celebrating the Cadwallader Award Winner; Honoring a special D5650 Rotarian with Rotary International’s Citation for Meritorious Service Award; recognizing the 16 Clubs who earned the Rotary Citation 2022-23; and introducing all the Golden Wheel Award Winners! It is going to be a jam-packed night of fun and excitement!!

In June 1999, a year after I joined the staff of Rotary International, I attended my first convention. It was then that I first witnessed the global power of Rotary and made my first batch of Rotary friends. And it was then that I was introduced to Singapore for a second time.
My first trip to Singapore occurred five years earlier when, as a journalist, I covered the third Europe-East Asia Economic Summit. At that time, Western financial media were referring to Singapore as the 20th century’s most successful development story, which meant that the summit lured scores of policymakers, economists, and businesspeople from across Europe and Asia.
Once a British Crown colony which subsequently merged with Malaysia, Singapore broke away and was founded as an independent sovereign nation in 1965. Despite predictions that a string of small islands that lack natural resources to survive, Lee Kwan Yew, who was referred to as the founding father of modern Singapore, turned the tattered outpost of the faded empire into a thriving modern nation. The archipelago of 64 islands that was once plagued by malaria and rife with ethnic conflicts among its Chinese, Malay, and Indian populations, now stands as a gleaming city state, known in the 1990s throughout the world as one of the four Asian Tigers for its robust economic transformation along with Hong Kong, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Having grown up in China, where decades of Mao’s draconian rule had impoverished the country, I, along with millions of other Chinese, became enamored of the Singapore model of economic success. My first impression of Singapore in 1994, which will forever be associated with the brightly illuminated skyscrapers that dotted the banks of the Singapore River, confirmed my belief that this was a place of modernity and prosperity.
Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) Winter 2023 Application

The Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) camp will be November 3-5, 2023 at Camp Kitaki near Louisville, NE. RYLA camp is an intensive 3-day training program for High School Sophomores and Juniors that helps participants think critically about important issues; share ideas with talented peers; learn how to coordinate and lead community service projects; discuss the importance of good governance and civil society to the world; and learn to think globally and explore issues that transcend national borders.
The camp focuses on youth leadership development. Participants will learn about Rotary International and what clubs do to make our world a better place. They will participate in small groups and will work together to hone their leadership skills and learn more about the 7 Areas of Focus of Rotary International. Participants also will have the opportunity to build their leadership skills with several outdoor team building activities that the YMCA staff facilitate. There is also time for fun and fellowship with many opportunities to get to know fellow campers.
One of the projects of the weekend will be the “Initiative Challenge” where groups will be selecting an aspect of protecting the environment and develop ways to act and minimize how our world can work toward saving our planet from the radical changes in our climate, our ecosystems, and the health of every living thing in the world. Participants will learn about how to make a positive impact as emerging leaders in their communities, as well as a knowledge of our impact on the world and how impact can be changed by the choices we make.

The Suburban Rotary golfers have been enjoying the opportunity to play 18 holes of golf every Tuesday morning. Most Tuesdays, we reserve 3 tee times (9:30, 9:37, and 9:45 AM) at Elmwood Park Golf Course. 21 Rotarians currently participate, some regularly and some only occasionally. Some are good golfers, and some are duffers at best. All Suburban Rotarians are welcome to join the golfing group. All ages, all genders, and all skill levels are welcome. Please contact Frank Goldberg (frankandleanne@cox.net) if you wish to be included in the camaraderie, fresh air, and the occasional birdie.
Mário César Martins de Camargo, a member of the Rotary Club of Santo André, São Paulo, Brazil, is the selection of the Nominating Committee for President to become Rotary International’s president for 2025-26. He will officially become the nominee on 15 September if no other candidates challenge him.
De Camargo plans to boost Rotary’s public image by working from the top down.
“Rotary today has strong competition for members and funds,” he says. “We need to rejuvenate the brand, especially in some zones. We should utilize post-pandemic meeting tools … to allow the president to address Rotarians all over the globe. We also need to develop more long-term partnerships with political, community, and business leaders. Let’s emphasize our greatest asset: 1.4 million volunteers.”
He also hopes to improve Rotary’s process for appointments and governance.
“Rotary should adopt a more transparent system to appoint volunteers for positions, with clear criteria and data-based evaluation of results,” he says.
De Camargo was president of Gráfica Bandeirantes and has been a consultant to the print industry in Brazil. He has also served as president and chair of several printing and graphics trade associations, including the Brazilian Association of Graphic Technology and ABIGRAF, the Brazilian Printing Industry Association.
R. Gordon R. McInally is president of Rotary International. He was educated at the Royal High School in Edinburgh and at the University of Dundee, where he earned his graduate degree in dental surgery. He operated his own dental practice in Edinburgh until 2016. Gordon was chair of the East of Scotland branch of the British Paedodontic Society and has held various academic positions. He has also served as a presbytery elder, chair of the Queensferry parish congregational board, and commissioner to the general assembly of the Church of Scotland.
